News

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) — Super Tuesday is officially over. There’s now a new battle for the 1st Congressional District in North Carolina.

Laurie Buckhout beat Sandy Smith in the Republican primary and will take on incumbent Congressman Don Davis, a Democrat, in November.

“We have all of the ingredients in the first district for a very exciting and close U.S. House race,” said Dr. Peter Francia, an ECU political science professor. “Laurie Buckhout brings a lot of strengths given her background in the military and success as a businesswoman. But Don Davis is the incumbent, and incumbents are very difficult to beat when they run for re-election.”

Laurie Buckhout is a retired Army Colonel and decorated combat commander who follows a long line of combat veterans, including her Infantry Colonel father, her Army Air Corps Flight Nurse mother, her grandfather, her uncles and multiple other relatives. Laurie’s husband Paul, a West Point graduate and Army Infantry Airborne Ranger who served with Delta Force, is also a retired officer from a family of combat veterans stretching back to the French and Indian Wars of 1754-1763. Laurie is also a committed constitutional conservative who proudly cast her first vote for Ronald Reagan in 1980.

Laurie grew up on a farm in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley and attended James Madison University on an ROTC Scholarship.  She was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Army Signal Corps in 1984 and spent the next 26 years in assignments around the world, including commanding an 800-person battalion task force as part of the initial spearhead attack into Iraq in 2003.  She holds a Bachelor of Science Degree from James Madison University, a Master’s of Military Arts and Science in National Military Strategy, and a Master’s of Science in Information Management from Webster University.

Retiring in from the Army in 2010, she founded her own business, Corvus Consulting, a strategic consulting and services group specializing in Electronic Warfare and Cyberspace Operations, which she grew to over $43M in value in less than seven years.  In 2019, Laurie sold her company and served on the new company’s Board of Directors for three years.  She is also a past President of the Association of Old Crows, the International Electronic Warfare Association; and served as a Special Government Employee supporting the US Department of Commerce.  She has extensive experience working with Federal and Congressional organizations on legal, budgetary and legislative matters.

Laurie’s military awards include the Distinguished Service Medal, the Bronze Star, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal (two awards), the Meritorious Service Medal (four awards), and several awards of Joint and Army Commendation and Achievement Medals and well as other various service awards.  She also wears permanent orders of the Meritorious Unit Citation, the Presidential Unit Citation, and the Meritorious Unit Award, as well as the Combat Action Badge, the Parachutist Badge, and the Joint Staff, White House and Army Staff Badges.

Laurie has been married to Paul for 29 years and they have 2 sons, John and Thomas, both College seniors.  They reside in Edenton, North Carolina where they are very active in supporting Veterans, conservative causes, the local baseball team (Go Steamers!) and the Boys and Girls Club of the Albemarle.

Issues

Priorities

SECURING OUR BORDER

America has seen a record-high number of border crossings thanks to the Biden Administration’s open border policies. Our nation is under siege by millions of illegal immigrants and tragically, the crisis of fentanyl pouring in through our southern border is enough to kill every American.

Laurie Buckhout is a STRONG advocate for securing our border by building the wall and reimplementing the “Remain in Mexico” policies of the Trump Administration.

FIXING OUR BROKEN ECONOMY

The Biden-Davis agenda created devastating inflation rates and made the cost of living unaffordable in Eastern North Carolina. Laurie will fight for working families who can’t afford another year of rising costs at the gas pump and grocery store.

As a small business owner, Laurie Buckhout knows what it takes to balance a budget and create American jobs. Rural communities like ours have seen the devastating effects of outsourcing good jobs. Laurie will fight to bring back jobs here in rural communities.

PROTECT THE 2ND AMENDMENT

Laurie Buckhout is no stranger to defending herself, her loved ones, and her country. As a combat veteran, Laurie understands the vital importance of the right to keep and bear arms. She will stand strong against the extremists who mock our hunting heritage and would punish law-abiding gun owners with additional red tape.

SUPPORTING OUR NATION’S MILITARY

America has the greatest fighting force in the world, but we must fight to keep it that way. A strong and ready military deters American enemies and establishes peace here at home. Laurie is committed to investing in our nation’s military to continue asserting our dominance over all threats, foreign and domestic. The United States must have the strength by all means necessary to protect us from countries like China, Iran, and Russia and to defend our allies like Israel.

SUPPORTING OUR VETERANS

Our troops make immense sacrifices while bravely serving our nation. They deserve a strong leader in Congress who will fight to ensure they receive the very best care when their mission is complete. Laurie’s promise to fellow veterans does not end when they return home, she will not rest until our veterans receive the proper care they deserve.
