Thom Tillis – September 26, 2020 (01:20)
The Charlotte Observer , – September 24, 2020 (Short)
U.S. Sen. Thom Tillis said Thursday he has “grave concerns” about North Carolina’s absentee by-mail system, less than two days after he said he had so much faith in the system that he challenged his Democratic challenger, Cal Cunningham, to vote by mail.
Tillis’ about-face comes after the North Carolina State Board of Elections unanimously agreed Tuesday to a tentative settlement outlining a series of changes to the absentee by-mail system. Wednesday, both of the board’s Republican members unexpectedly resigned, saying they were misled during the settlement discussion, a claim that a Board of Elections spokesperson disputed.
Shortly before Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court Ruth Bader Ginsburg passed away on Sept. 18 after serving on the nation’s highest court for 27 years, she dictated to her niece her final wish: that her seat not be filled until a new president was elected.
That meant little to Senate Republican leader Sen. Mitch McConnell, who wasted no time in saying he’d move to confirm whatever nominee President Donald Trump might offer.
It also meant little to embattled North Carolina Republican Sen. Thom Tillis, who quashed any notion of fair play related to McConnell blocking President Barack Obama’s nomination of Merrick Garland upon the death of then-justice Antonin Scalia back in 2016, more than eight months before the presidential election.

Issues
Economy
hom knows what it is like to live paycheck to paycheck having grown up in a working class family and then raising his young family while working and attending school at night, struggling to make ends meet. That is why Thom has championed commonsense solutions to build a healthy economy and ensure all hardworking North Carolinians have ample opportunities to get good jobs, pursue careers, and secure the futures they deserve.
Education
As the former PTA President of his daughter’s public high school, Thom understands the importance of providing educational opportunities for all students. He also understands the importance of empowering teachers and parents – not federal bureaucrats – to play a large decision-making role at the local level. Thom has advocated for reforms making it easier for parents to engage in their children’s education and removing burdensome roadblocks on educators and local school districts. As the product of both community colleges and public universities, Thom has also focused on supporting North Carolina’s community college and public university systems.
Environment
From mountains to beaches, North Carolina is home to some of the country’s most beautiful landscapes. Thom has worked to ensure our state’s resources are utilized to their potential while preserving them for use and enjoyment of future generations. Thom believes a key to this effort will be addressing climate change through market-based solutions that foster innovation and drive economic growth.
Health Care
Thom has focused on health care reforms to ensure North Carolina families have access to affordable and quality health care choices. Thom has also worked on real bipartisan solutions to combat drug addiction and advance medical research and innovation.
Immigration
Senator Tillis has established himself as a national leader pushing for secure borders and a merit-based immigration system, working to break decades of gridlock and inaction from Republicans and Democrats.
Infrastructure
Thom has been an advocate for North Carolina interests in the Senate, fighting for North Carolina’s priorities ranging from disaster relief to transportation and infrastructure investments to ensuring the federal government’s promises to our local communities across the state are being fulfilled.
Veterans
One of Senator Tillis’ top priorities has been ensuring that Congress is doing everything in its power to keep its promises to North Carolina’s nearly 800,000 veterans, repaying the tremendous debt of gratitude we owe the brave men and women who have served our nation. Thom has worked across the aisle to secure a number of wins for veterans, including major reforms to make the VA more efficient, effective, and accountable.
AGRICULTURE & RURAL PROSPERITY
Agriculture is North Carolina’s largest industry and a cornerstone of rural North Carolina, creating an economic impact of more than $87 billion each year and supporting 686,000 jobs across the state. Thom has been a leader in ensuring North Carolina agriculture’s continued success, working to create real, commonsense solutions for the challenges our farmers and rural communities face every day.
CRIMINAL JUSTICE REFORM
Thom has been a longtime advocate of criminal justice reform and has been instrumental in successfully implementing criminal justice reform at both the state and federal level. He recognizes that when done right, reform can strike the balance between reducing crime, making our communities safer, and ensuring our justice system is more equitable.
As North Carolina Speaker of the House in 2011, Thom spearheaded the passage of the Justice Reinvestment Act, sweeping criminal justice reform legislation. This law places an emphasis on rehabilitation and reducing the likelihood of returning to prison, requiring those incarcerated on felony charges to be supervised for 9 to 12 months following their release.
The law has resulted in a reduction in North Carolina’s prison population and a significant, double-digit decrease in the recidivism rate. The N.C. Department of Public Safety estimates that the law has also saved hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars over the last several years.
